How One Gift Brought Comfort Through Grief
Share
When I lost my mum beautiful bouquets of flowers arrived. They filled our home with vibrant colour and beautiful fragrance. Yet, as the days passed, they began to wilt. Despite refreshing the water, adding sugar, and rearranging them, their beauty was inevitably fleeting.
One day, a friend brought me a different kind of gift - a glass orb with tiny mosaic mirrors, known as a Friendship Ball.
One afternoon, I walked by it and noticed the tiny mirrors on the outside of the ball casting delicate patterns of light across the walls and ceiling. It made me smile, and from that day on, every time the light dances across the room, we say, “Grandma is casting her light.”
After my mother’s passing, a friend lost her father, and I gifted her a Friendship Ball too. She later shared how the colours and reflections brought comfort, filling her room with warmth both in sunlight and by candlelight.
When another friend tragically lost her husband shortly after, I wanted to gift her that same meaningful light, but I couldn’t find one. That search led me down a path that would soon become Grief Gifts, inspired by the comfort the Friendship Ball had on me.
There’s something deeply comforting about light, movement, and reflection in times of loss. It feels as though our loved ones are still with us, casting their light and presence in subtle, beautiful ways.
Thank you to that special friend for your thoughtful gift and support during such a difficult time.
